Chemistry

Physical Science

1st 6 weeks

Chapters 1-4

This is our introduction to the basics of chemistry and the internal construction of an atom.

Chapters 16-18

In addition to studying the atom we measure mass, volume, density, buoyancy and viscosity of materials.

2nd 6 weeks

Chapters 5-7

Next, we learn how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table and how they bond to form chemical compounds. We calculate bond types, formula mass, percent composition and empirical formulas.

Chapters 19-22

We learn the details of the Periodic Table, put together chemical formulas, write and balance chemical equations and review the special chemistry of carbon and the atomic nucleus.

3rd 6 weeks

Chapters 8-9, review

From there, we study what happens in a chemical reaction and how to use chemical reactions in the “real world.” We learn how to balance equations and even the meaning of "stoichiometry."

Chapters 23-28, review

We form solutions, study fresh-water and tap-water quality, learn about acids and bases and take pH readings on many of the chemicals in our environment.

4th 6 weeks

Chapters 10-14

We take detailed looks at gases, solids and liquids, in that order. We study the key gas laws and the role of molarity and molality in the strength of solutions.

Chapters 1-4

We use metric math to calculate speed and acceleration, take a look at Newton’s Laws and apply them to do work in simple machines.

5th 6 weeks

Chapters 15-17

We focus on acids and bases, some of our most famous and useful chemical compounds, as well as the complex energy changes in chemical reactions.

Chapters 5-10

We focus on energy, especially electrical energy. We learn how to form electrical circuits, the roles of voltage, current and resistance, and the principles behind electric motors and generators.

6th 6 weeks

Chapters 20, 22, term paper

We conclude by studying the special properties of carbon and the unique chemistry behind nuclear energy. You also write a paper on a significant chemist or a significant event in chemistry history.

Chapters 11-15, review

Last, we look at the role of waves, sound and light in the world around us. Among other topics we will study the math behind music, the science of color and how glasses and contact lenses correct our vision.
