Challenge: Science classes are not the easiest courses you will take. They require reading, homework and study for tests. They also use algebra. However, dont quit doing well in a difficult subject gives practical training and confidence!

Grading: Your grade will be based on the following:

Tests 50% (3 tests per six weeks)

                Lab/Reports 20% (usually 4 per six weeks)

                Homework/Class notebook 20% (15-20 assignments + class notes)

Daily quizzes 10% (15-20 six-question quizzes at the beginning of class)

Please keep a neat 3-ring notebook that will include class notes, your homework, and lab reports. That will be part of your overall grade. Remember that organization is 90% of academic success. (I will try to remember that, too.)

How Class Works: Im here to help. In order to do that for you, we have to get started ASAP. Come in with your supplies, take a seat, and lets get to work. Your assignment for the day is posted on the left-hand side of the white board. On most days we will watch a demonstration or a video clip, take notes, do practice problems, review homework and cover questions. After we get settled into a routine, we will have a lab about one day every two weeks. We will take a test about every two weeks.

My Class Rules:    1. Stay awake. Ill do my best to be interesting. Make sure youve had enough rest the night before!

                                2. Dont talk. I need your undivided attention and your friends, too.

                                3. Do only my work. If we give100% to each class during that class, things work out.

                                4. Stay in your seat or at your lab station. Please go to the restroom before class.

                                5. Let me dismiss class. If you are late for another class, I will make it right.

And one more: I check dress code and IDs.

Academic Honesty: What you learn on your own is yours to keep. I dont mind you doing homework together, as long as each person is making a contribution. The same goes for lab reports. However, quizzes and tests are 100% on your own. If youre caught cheating, its a zero on the work, a visit with the principal (who may add other penalties), and a parent conference. Please dont do it.

Makeup Work:       1. If you are here when I assign homework, then the homework is due the day you get back.

                                2. If you miss a quiz or a test, you have 5 school days to make it up.

                                3. If the absence is unexcused, I have to give a zero for any missed work including major tests.

                                4. We dont do makeup work during class time its either before school, after school, or during lunch.

                                5. Makeup quizzes and tests are not identical to the originals.

Lab Safety: People can and do get hurt in science labs each year. We will spend at least 20 days in the lab, and I do not want anything to happen to you or those around you. If you act in an unsafe manner or get into horseplay I will bench you and give you a grade penalty for that lab depending on how serious the problem is.

Consequences: My rewards include congratulation phone calls home, free time, science games, and others you will find out later. Punishments are classroom detentions, phone calls (usually on Friday or Saturday), essays, and office referrals.
